Soil and Fertility

Soil Health Analyzer

Interpret soil test values for pH, EC, organic carbon and available N, P and K against commonly used reference ranges.

Your soil test values

Copy values from your Soil Health Card or lab report. Nutrients are in kg per hectare, as on most Indian soil reports.

1:2.5 soil:water, as reported by your lab.

Indicative interpretation

  • pH · 7.9Moderately alkaline

Alkaline soils can reduce availability of some micronutrients. Whether any amendment is needed depends on further tests (e.g. ESP, carbonates) — ask your lab or KVK.

  • EC · 0.45 dS/mNormal (non-saline)

Salt level is unlikely to affect most crops.

  • Organic carbon · 0.42%Low

Low organic carbon is common. Practices such as adding well-decomposed organic matter and retaining crop residues are generally discussed for building it over time.

  • Available N · 230 kg/haLow

Available N is rated low on this scale. Your lab or KVK can advise a crop-specific nitrogen plan.

  • Available P · 18 kg/haMedium

Available P is in the medium range.

  • Available K · 310 kg/haHigh

Available K is rated high on this scale.

How it's calculated

Values are compared against commonly used general rating ranges:

  • pH: <5.5 strongly acidic · 5.5–6.5 acidic · 6.5–7.5 near neutral · 7.5–8.5 moderately alkaline · >8.5 strongly alkaline
  • EC: <1 normal · 1–3 may affect sensitive crops · >3 high
  • Organic carbon: <0.5% low · 0.5–0.75% medium · >0.75% high
  • Available N: <280 low · 280–560 medium · >560 kg/ha high
  • Available P: <10 low · 10–25 medium · >25 kg/ha high
  • Available K: <110 low · 110–280 medium · >280 kg/ha high

Assumptions

Ranges differ between laboratories, extraction methods and states. This tool does not prescribe fertilizer doses, lime, gypsum or any other treatment. Amendments such as gypsum or lime need specific lab tests and crop context — never pH alone.

Worked example

pH 7.9 → moderately alkaline; OC 0.42% → low; N 230 kg/ha → low; P 18 → medium; K 310 → high.

This is an educational interpretation only. For crop-specific fertilizer and amendment recommendations, consult your soil-test report, the testing laboratory, or your local Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK).
